What is the largest known star in the Universe?

How big is it?

Where can I see it, in relation to a star chart (Ex, is it near Orion, Big Dipper, or some other constellation, etc)?

How much space would it take up if it were in our Solar System? Would it take up the same amount of space as Saturn's orbit or go out to Pluto's orbit or what? What is the largest known star in the Universe?Yes, it is VY Canis Majoris, but since it is SO large, numbers are meaningless to convey the sheer immensity of this star. Therefore, follow the link to a video to get a better gauge of its size.

It'll take up about 1/3 of the solar systems radius, VY Canis Majoris being about 9 AU compared to the solar system's 30 AU (average distance from the Sun to Neptune). What is the largest known star in the Universe?VY Canis Majoris is generally referred to as the largest *known* star.

But it's radius is hard to calculate to precision.

It is between 1800-2100 solar radii (a value of 1 is equal to the radius of the Sun).

If it is at the low end, stars like VV Cephei (1600-1900 Solar Radii) and KY Cygni (1400-2800 Solar radii) might be larger.

VY Canis Majoris is a variable star, at its brightest, its apparent magnitude is around 6.6... a little fainter than the limit of the human eye on even the darkest of nights. And located, obviously, in the constellation Canis Major.

VV Cephei is easier to find, located in Cepheus, it has a magnitude of 4.91, a very easy target in moderate binoculars.

I would recommend getting a detailed sky atlas, or downloading a planetarium program http://www.stellarium.org is a very good one, free download, to be able to find these stars. A verbal description won't be very helpful.

If VY Canis Majoris is at the upper end of its size estimate, (2100 SR) it would extent roughly 9AU in radius, or about to the distance of Saturn. What is the largest known star in the Universe? It is hard to answer this since the exact sizes of stars are hard to determine. However, the largest ones we know are:

VY Canis Majoris

Mu Cephei

VV Cephei

They say these would approximately extend to Saturns orbit in terms of radius.

The most massive one we know is:

Eta CarinaeWhat is the largest known star in the Universe?
VY Canis Majoris.
